Oscars

The 88th annual Academy Awards are on Sunday, and the swag bag awarded to the major nominees is packed with 33 fancy products and weekend trip packages. The items range from the luxuriously practical -- a year's worth of fully loaded Audi A4 rentals ($45,000) -- to the truly bizarre -- umm, we don't even want to know what a Vampire Breast Lift ($1,900) is all about.
But (lawsuit aside) it's some of the fitness freebies that have us longing to be famous, or at least rich.
Of the total items in the gift bag (worth an estimated $232,000), 11 of the products are fitness related. Just those 11 things add up to whopping $18,553.44. Yes, you read that right. Oscar nominees urged to skip Israel swag bag trip

An Oscar statue is seen during a reception for Oscar-nominated short films ahead of the upcoming 88th Academy Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, California, February 23, 2016. REUTERS/Danny Moloshok Oscar-nominated celebrities were urged on Wednesday to skip a $55,000 trip to Israel offered as part of an awards gift bag.

Two U.S.-based groups campaigning for an end to Israel's occupation of the Palestinian Territories made the plea in a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times that appeared five days before the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday.
"#SkipTheTrip. Don't endorse Israeli apartheid," said the ad, sponsored by the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and Jewish Voice for Peace.
The ad said the trip, which is partially paid for by the Israeli government, was part of a larger "'Brand Israel' strategy to distract from almost 50 years of illegal occupation of Palestinian land."
"As was the case many years ago in South Africa, celebrities are being asked to refrain from whitewashing apartheid policies," Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The trip is one of the most expensive items in a swag bag handed out to the five Oscar-nominated directors and 20 lead and supporting actor and actress nominees, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sylvester Stallone, Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Matt Damon and Kate Winslet.
The gift bag is not affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars.
The Academy last week filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles-based Distinctive Assets accusing the gifting group of promoting the bag as official Oscars swag.
The Israeli government earlier this month confirmed it was funding $15,000 to $18,000 of each 10-day trip as a means of offsetting news coverage of the country's troubles.
"These are the most senior people in the film industry in Hollywood and leading opinion-formers who we are interested in hosting," said Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin. "They will experience the country first-hand and not through the media."
It was not immediately known whether any of the Oscar-nominated directors, actors and actresses will take up the offer, which must be declared to U.S. tax authorities.
"Creed" supporting actor Stallone signed a pro-Israel petition during the 2104 Gaza war, while "Bridge of Spies" nominee Rylance has signed a petition circulated by Artists for Palestine UK which calls for a cultural boycott of Israel.

This Season's Newest Fashion Designer Is...Amazon?

Silicon Valley isn't known for swaddling itself in designer garments. But that hasn't stopped massive online retailers like eBay from trying to buy their way into the front row.
The latest company to try its hand at fashion is Amazon, which recently debuted seven lines of its own. The launch has been quiet; it didn't invite editors into ateliers or try to slip its merch onto any celebrities. Probably with good reason; the designs are much more middle of the road than high street.
With the exception of Lark & Ro and Scout + Ro, you won't find any special storefronts for these lines on Amazon, but we sought them out and sized them up.

Franklin & Freeman
With a name and styles that suggest a brand like Cole Haan, Franklin & Freeman is a line of basic but fashionable men's shoes. It's got a full stock of what a man's wardrobe needs: wingtip Oxfords, Venetian loafers, and Chelsea and chukka boots.

Franklin Tailored
Falling just shy of Banana Republic and J. Crew in terms of the modernity of cut and quality for men's suits, there's Franklin Tailored. Men can find wool suits for $250, rep ties and slightly more outré paisley ones for $25. Beyond those basics there's a velvet blazer that's Chuck Bass on a budget.

James & Erin
James & Erin is Chico's with less chic. It's drapey basics for women with a bit of plaid and peasant blouses in the mix. The most fashion-y find is a double-layer asymmetric dress.

Lark & Ro
Lark & Ro has a Brooklyn-friendly name but is a little too pedestrian for city streets. It's mostly mumsy-ish cuts and prints that would blend right in at Talbots. Maybe because it's nearly spring, maybe because the print is its stock in trade, but there's some floral overgrowth in this line.

North Eleven
Knit outerwear is what North Eleven is known for so far. Ponchos that are punched up with color blocking and fringe, infinity scarves in earth tones, and hat-and-glove sets that are matchy-matchy, the line has them all sewn up.
